Trail Mix September 2011

In the history of American music, few years are as important as 1927. In that year, Ralph Peer set up shop in Bristol, Tennessee, and set about recording traditional Appalachian music. Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family, among many others, came to record, and thus began the history of country music. Now, Bristol celebrates its role in the advent of traditional country music with the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. For three days, fans from across the globe flock to State Street, where 20+ stages play host to 150+ artists who represent the finest in bluegrass, folk, country, indie rock, and Americana. This month’s Trail Mix is just a taste of the musical goodness the Reunion has to offer. Featured here are Grammy winners Marty Stuart and Chris Thomas King, indie folksters David Wax Museum and Spirit Family Reunion, honky tonkers Dale Watson and Girls, Guns, & Glory, and bluegrass from Junior Sisk, Don Rigsby, and Steep Canyon Rangers. If you dig what you hear, head to Bristol on September 16th. If you can’t make it to town, seek out a record from an artist on this month’s mix, buy it, and spin it!
