Sunscreen Revisited: Yours Still Sucks, Unless…

I received a fair bit of feedback from my post on sunscreen, so I thought I’d follow up and dish some worthy info from friends in the field.

First off, your sunscreen still sucks–unless you’re lucky enough to be using one of the “recommended” brands on the Environmental Working Group’s website (https://tinyurl.com/2bymspf). Turns out there are quite a few quality brands out there, including many available at places like Pharmaca, Target, etc. Our local buddies at Verde PR wrote to let me know they rep “beyond coastal”, which is among the most highly rated sunscreens on the EWG site. I’ll be pedaling by the office to snag a few tubes to, er, test!

A friend also wrote to let me know the story on melanoma has taken an unexpected turn. (Her excellent article here: https://tinyurl.com/2f425uu.) Researchers from the University of New Mexico and the National Institute of Health, among other institutions, now say the link between sun exposure and melanoma isn’t necessarily established. In short, nobody’s sure if the sun causes melanoma and indeed some research suggest that it doesn’t.

Yeah?

You still need to wear your (quality, approved, non-toxic!) sunscreen, if only to protect against less-lethal forms of cancer like basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas….but, in terms of melanoma, the jury is still out.

Me? I’m still wearing my stuff and I’ll look a youthful 23 when the sun worshippers are sporting the burned-out baseball-glove look at 50!

So there you have it–a bit more info to chew on and another plea for you to check the EWG site and get an approved sunscreen. You look so good, baby; keep it that way!
