Festival Recap: Lyons Outdoor Games

Greeting friends. Have you ever been to a place where you can do yoga with baby goats, watch dogs jump 25 feet into a pool of water, sample beer from 50+ breweries, ANNND compete in a trail run beer relay? That’s where we were this past weekend. Lyons, Colorado hosted the annual Lyons Outdoor Games and Burning Can Festival put on by Oskar Blues Brewery. The single day festival started out with relaxing, early morning baby goat yoga to get your mind ready for a day of live music, beer drinking, and outdoor gaming.Roxy was on location to gather valuable intel on the famed baby goat yoga. She has assured me that it was “delightful” and has said “10 out of 10 would do baby goat yoga again.” Taber Ward, founder of Mountain Flower Goat Dairy Farm in Boulder, Colo, led a morning Vinyasa Yoga session and brought 17 baby goats with her to join the practice. It was adorable, and we would encourage everyone to give it a try.Following yoga, we noticed a large crowd amassing behind us at the La Sportiva tent. It was time for the La Sportiva Trail Run Relay and Trail Run Beer Relay! Teams of two and four were at the starting line, some in costume, and ready to hit the trail. The 5 km course included trails, open fields, and steep mountain single track. The team with the most laps in the shortest time won awesome prizes from Oskar Blues and a new pair of La Sportiva shoes. All in a days run. But Lyons Outdoor Games isn’t just for humans. This year also included a surprisingly entertaining Dock Dogs competition. Dock Dogs is billed as “The World’s Premier Canine Aquatics Competition”. This competition was serious business. Dogs jumped into a large pool of water from a long dock, and the dog who could jump the farthest won. These furry athletes were jumping farther than 25 feet! While all of this was happening, there were also mountain bike clinics, kayaking, disc golf, BMX dirt jumping, and slack lining. Did we mention this was also a beer event? Starting in the afternoon, 50+ breweries started dishing out samples to thirsty outdoor enthusiasts. It was difficult for us to stay focused throughout the day, but we ran a successful gear raffle
Lyons Outdoor Games and Burning Can had a little something for everyone. It was one of the more unique festivals that we’ve had the pleasure of attending, and we hope to come back next year. Up next we’ll be heading to the Go Pro Mountain Games in Vail, Colo., June 8th – 11th.
