From Nebraska whitetails to Colorado elk country, here’s what worked.
Having grown up hunting, really just casually with my dad, since as far back as I can remember, I’ve had the chance to use and test a lot of outdoor gear. I’m no expert or great hunter, but I’ve been loving being outdoors and hunting and fishing since I was maybe 10 or 12 years old, at least long enough to remember when waterproof gear back in my Boy Scout days meant an army surplus poncho, and Wigwam was the only wool sock available.

It’s not something I talk about a lot, and I think things around guns in general have changed a lot since I was a kid, but I know plenty of hunters that I highly respect, for a lot of reasons, and it’s part of who I am.
If there’s one outdoor pursuit that’s benefited from advances in technology more than any other, it’s hunting. Because when you’re hunting you are also backpacking, hiking, bushwhacking, sitting, and living outdoors. Over the last couple of seasons, I’ve been exploring some new brands alongside old favorites. We’re living in the golden age of gear, where trail cameras send photos to your phone and beginners are making 300 yard shots. Last October I had the chance to put some new gear through the paces at Arterburn Outdoors Beyond Hunter Education Camp in Nebraska, and what started as a media camp for outdoor writers became a masterclass in field-to-table hunting and a hardcore gear testing opportunity.
Maven RS1.2 2.5-15x44mm Riflescope
Maven’s RS1.2 riflescope topped the Benelli Lupo rifles we were shooting in camp, chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. The scope features Japanese glass with extra-low dispersion (ED) elements for enhanced clarity and color fidelity. At around $1,200, it’s positioned in the middle of the premium scope market, but the optical quality and feature set compete with scopes costing several hundred dollars more.
The 2.5-15x magnification range covers most hunting scenarios from close timber shots to long-range western hunting. The first focal plane (FFP) reticle means the subtensions remain accurate throughout the magnification range, essential for using holdovers at any power setting. The scope includes a true zero stop, exposed elevation turret with 100 MOA of travel, and a capped windage turret with 70 MOA of travel. The illuminated reticle offers 10 brightness settings for low-light conditions without washing out the sight picture.
The side parallax adjustment goes down to 25 yards, useful for both close shots and eliminating parallax error at longer ranges. After approximately 200 rounds during sight-in and practice, the scope held zero consistently and tracked accurately through box tests. The turrets provide tactile and audible clicks at 0.25 MOA adjustments.

Maven uses a direct-to-consumer model, eliminating distributor markups. They offer a demo program where you can try a scope for two weeks before committing to purchase—return it, keep it, or upgrade to new. The RS1.2 weighs 26.4 ounces and measures 14.5 inches in length. For hunters looking for premium glass without the premium markup, this scope delivers exceptional value. The lifetime warranty and Montana-based customer service add to the appeal.
Hornady Precision Hunter 6.5 Creedmoor 143gr ELD-X
Hornady’s Precision Hunter ammunition featuring 143-grain ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag eXpanding) bullets represents the current state of the art in factory hunting ammunition. The ELD-X design incorporates a Heat Shield tip made from a heat-resistant polymer that resists deformation from aerodynamic heating, maintaining the bullet’s ballistic coefficient throughout its flight—a problem that plagued traditional polymer tips.
The 143-grain bullets have a sectional density of .293 and a G1 ballistic coefficient of .625, providing exceptional downrange performance with minimal wind drift. Muzzle velocity from 24-inch barrels averages 2,700 fps. The ammunition consistently produces sub-MOA groups at 100 yards—under one inch—with factory rifles, accuracy that previously required custom rifles and handloaded ammunition.
The bullet construction features an interlock ring and tapered jacket that promotes controlled expansion while maintaining 85-90% weight retention. On game, this translates to deep penetration with significant wound channels. The high BC and sectional density make this load effective beyond 400 yards when conditions allow.
The 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge with this loading produces approximately 15 ft-lbs of recoil in an 8-pound rifle, compared to 20+ ft-lbs from a .30-06. The reduced recoil allows for better shot placement and faster follow-up shots. Hornady’s Precision Hunter line uses temperature-stable propellants for consistent velocity across varying conditions. At around $40-45 per 20-round box, it’s priced competitively with other premium hunting ammunition.

At $80-120 per camera, the Edge series provides exceptional value for hunters wanting real-time scouting intelligence without the premium price of competing brands.
Sitka Gear Layering System
Sitka’s Fall 2024 line features the OPTIFADE Cover pattern, designed specifically for hunting in greener, more vegetated environments typical of whitetail habitat. The pattern uses macro and micro pattern elements scientifically developed to break up the human outline at varying distances, based on how ungulates perceive shapes and movement.
The Core Lightweight Hoody base layer uses synthetic materials with Polygiene odor control treatment that inhibits bacterial growth. The fabric wicks moisture while maintaining thermal regulation across activity levels. Weight is 5.3 ounces for a size large, light enough that you forget you’re wearing it.
The Equinox Guard Hoody and Pants feature InsectShield permethrin treatment permanently bonded to the fabric for the life of the garment—no reapplication needed. The lightweight synthetic fabric (4.7 oz/sq yard) provides UPF 50+ sun protection while remaining breathable. The hoody includes thumb loops for hand coverage, integrated face mask for concealment or bug protection, and a quarter-zip design for ventilation control.
The Stratus system (jacket and bibs) uses a quiet micro-fleece face fabric bonded to a windproof membrane—the sweet spot for active hunting in variable conditions. The jacket features functional pit zips for heat dumping, harness-compatible hand pockets, and a rangefinder pocket. The bibs include full-length side zips for easy on/off with boots, adjustable suspenders that stay in place, and integrated knee pads for crawling. Total weight for the system is approximately 3 pounds.
The Fanatic series employs a berber fleece face fabric with high-loft insulation for late-season and stationary hunting. The fabric tests at less than 25 decibels of sound at 5 yards—quieter than a whisper. The jacket includes a safety harness pass-through port and dedicated grunt tube pocket. The bibs feature a high hand-warmer pocket and full-zip legs.
A complete Sitka system represents a significant investment—easily $1,500-2,000—but the performance across temperature ranges from 15 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the durability over multiple seasons makes the math work for serious hunters.
Waterfowl Innovation: Sitka Delta VentLite Zip GTX Wader
Sitka’s Delta VentLite Zip GTX Wader represents a breakthrough in waterfowl wader technology. At $1,400, it’s the most expensive wader on the market, but it’s also the most advanced. The wader combines GORE-TEX PRO laminate construction that’s 200% more abrasion resistant than standard materials with the revolutionary VentLite GORE-TEX Boot that’s 37% lighter than conventional wader boots.

The VentLite boot changes everything about how waders feel and perform. Using GORE-TEX Invisible Fit construction with PrimaLoft Gold insulation, the boot provides temperature regulation across seasons while maintaining complete waterproof protection. The boot’s exoskeleton design provides support and protection while maintaining flexibility. It fits and feels more like an athletic shoe than a traditional rubber boot—you can actually feel the ground beneath you and move naturally.
This is the first wader to feature GORE-TEX construction from top to bottom, providing superior breathability compared to neoprene while maintaining waterproof integrity. The upper features a YKK AquaSeal center front zipper—completely waterproof while allowing easy entry and exit without the gymnastics required by traditional waders.
High handwarmer pockets are positioned above the water line and angled to shed water away from the openings. The Cordura webbing belt provides additional security against high water situations. Storage includes water-resistant chest pockets with YKK zippers and an interior mesh pocket for licenses and small essentials.
Internal knee pads and Cordura panels protect high-wear areas during ice breaking, brush busting, and boat entry/exit. The streamlined, adjustable suspension system eliminates traditional buckles and hardware for a cleaner profile that doesn’t catch on vegetation. For serious waterfowl hunters who measure their season in dozens of hunts rather than a handful, the mobility and comfort improvements could transform how long and hard you can hunt.
ScentLok BE:1 Series
ScentLok’s BE:1 series represents the current generation of activated carbon scent control technology. The system uses activated carbon derived from coconut shells, treated to increase surface area—one gram contains the surface area equivalent of a football field for adsorbing odor molecules.
The BE:1 Reactor jacket and pants use a soft, quiet polyester outer shell with the Carbon Alloy technology sandwiched between fabric layers. The carbon is bonded to a substrate that prevents it from settling or clumping, maintaining consistent coverage. High-odor zones like underarms and waist receive additional antimicrobial treatments using silver ions that inhibit bacterial growth.
The jacket features a fitted hood that doesn’t obstruct peripheral vision, hand muff pocket for warming, and safety harness access port. Multiple pockets include fleece-lined hand pockets and chest pockets for calls and wind checker. The pants include articulated knees, hip vents for temperature regulation, and full-length side zips for easy on/off with boots. Total weight for jacket and pants is approximately 3.5 pounds.
For maximum effectiveness, ScentLok recommends storing garments in an airtight container (they sell one specifically designed for their clothing) and reactivating the carbon every 40 hours of field use by placing in a dryer on high heat for 40 minutes. This process releases trapped odor molecules and restores the carbon’s adsorption capacity—the garments can be reactivated multiple times per season.
While scent control remains somewhat controversial, the technology has measurable effects. Laboratory testing shows significant reduction in odor molecules passing through the fabric. Field testing shows deer approaching from downwind positions at close range without showing typical alarm behavior. At around $300 for jacket and pants, it’s an investment in an additional layer of concealment.
Camp Chef Mountain Series Stoves
Camp Chef stoves transform camp cooking. The Mountain Series two-burner design features 20,000 BTU/hour output per burner with precise control from simmer to searing heat—actual temperature control rather than the typical “high” and “nuclear” settings of basic camp stoves.
The 16-inch cooking system provides 448 square inches of cooking surface, enough for multiple pans or a griddle accessory. The three-sided windscreen improves performance in windy conditions while still allowing front access for cooking. The matchless ignition system uses a piezo igniter that works reliably even in cold, wet conditions.

The stoves feature heavy-duty aluminized steel construction that resists warping at high temperatures. The cooking grates are cast iron for even heat distribution and retention—essential for proper searing. They’re removable for easy cleaning. The adjustable leg levelers compensate for uneven ground, keeping your cooking surface level.
Accessories expand capability significantly. The griddle box turns the stove into a flat-top grill for breakfast cooking. The BBQ box adds wood pellet grilling capability. The oven box allows actual baking in camp—from biscuits to cobblers. Each accessory is designed to maximize heat efficiency and cooking performance.
The system runs on standard 16.4-ounce propane cylinders with approximately 3 hours of runtime on high per cylinder. An adapter allows connection to 20-pound propane tanks for base camps. The entire system packs into a compact carry case measuring 16″ x 24″ x 4″ and weighs 18 pounds. At around $300 for the base system, it’s an investment that elevates camp meals from survival food to legitimate cuisine.
Engel 65 High Performance Cooler
The Engel 65 (ENG65) represents the pinnacle of rotomolded cooler technology. The construction features seamless rotomolded polyethylene with 2 inches of polyurethane insulation in the walls and 3 inches in the lid—the same insulation used in commercial freezers. This isn’t just about keeping beer cold; it’s about preserving game meat in the field.
The cooler’s gasket creates an airtight seal using a silicone gasket that maintains compression. When properly closed, the lid should hold vacuum pressure when lifted—if air rushes in when you crack the lid, it’s sealed correctly. This seal is critical for ice retention and preventing warm air infiltration.
Ice retention testing shows 8-10 days in 90-degree conditions when pre-cooled and using a 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio. Pre-cooling is essential—chill the cooler overnight before loading. The 65-quart capacity holds approximately 64 cans plus 20 pounds of ice, or more importantly, a boned-out deer or elk quarters with adequate ice for preservation.
Hardware includes marine-grade stainless steel that won’t corrode, oversized rubber T-latches that can be operated with gloves, and integrated padlock holes for security. Non-slip rubber feet prevent sliding in truck beds. The drain plug features a threaded connection rather than push-pull rubber that inevitably fails. An integrated ruler on the lid allows for fish measurement without additional tools.
Dry weight is 29 pounds—substantial but manageable with the molded-in handles. External dimensions are optimized to fit in truck beds with room for additional gear. At $400-450, it costs 3-4 times more than basic coolers, but the construction quality, ice retention, and lifetime warranty make it a long-term investment. For hunters who regularly travel long distances with game meat or spend extended time in the field, the reliability becomes essential.
Garmin inReach Mini 2 Satellite Communicator
The inReach Mini 2 has become essential safety equipment for backcountry hunters. At 3.5 ounces and measuring just 2.04″ x 3.90″ x 1.03″, it’s smaller and lighter than most knives, yet provides potentially life-saving communication capability anywhere on earth.
The device provides two-way satellite messaging via the Iridium network, which offers truly global coverage including polar regions. Unlike cell phones or standard GPS devices, it works in deep canyons, dense forest, and remote wilderness where no other communication is possible. Messages can be sent to phone numbers or email addresses, and recipients can reply directly.
The SOS function connects to Garmin’s 24/7 search and rescue monitoring center, staffed by emergency response professionals who coordinate with local rescue services. The two-way communication allows you to describe the emergency and receive confirmation that help is coming. The GPS provides exact coordinates to rescue teams.
Battery life extends to 14 days in 10-minute tracking mode or 30 days in 30-minute tracking mode. In expedition mode with 1-hour tracking intervals, it can run for 30 days. The rechargeable lithium battery charges via USB-C in approximately 3 hours. The IPX7 water rating means it withstands immersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Operating temperature range is -20°C to 60°C, covering all hunting conditions.
Subscription plans range from $14.95/month for basic safety features (SOS and 10 text messages) to $64.95/month for unlimited messaging and tracking. Annual plans provide savings, and plans can be suspended during off-season to reduce costs. The device pairs with the Garmin Explore smartphone app for easier message composition and map viewing. For solo hunters or anyone venturing into remote areas, this device provides peace of mind and practical communication that could save your life.
Maven B.2 9×45 Binoculars
Maven’s B.2 9×45 binoculars hit the optimal balance between magnification, light gathering, and stability for hunting applications. The 9x magnification provides detailed observation while remaining stable enough for extended freehand glassing—critical when you’re spending hours picking apart hillsides for game.
The optics feature extra-low dispersion (ED) glass that virtually eliminates chromatic aberration, providing sharp, color-accurate images edge to edge. Dielectric coatings on the Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms increase light transmission to over 92%, resulting in bright images even in low light. The phase correction coatings enhance resolution and contrast, making it easier to spot game in shadows or heavy cover.
The 45mm objectives gather substantial light for dawn and dusk hunting while keeping weight reasonable at 28.2 ounces. Field of view measures 341 feet at 1,000 yards—wide enough for scanning while maintaining magnification for detail. Close focus distance is 9.8 feet, useful for viewing tracks, scat, or rubs while scouting.
The magnesium alloy chassis provides durability while minimizing weight. The armor coating offers grip security and impact protection. IPX7 waterproofing means complete protection from rain and water immersion. Argon purging prevents internal fogging when moving between temperature extremes.
Eye relief is 17.8mm, generous enough for eyeglass wearers. The twist-up eyecups have multiple positions with firm detents for consistent eye placement. The focus wheel requires 1.5 turns from close focus to infinity—fast enough for quick focusing on moving game but not so fast that fine focus becomes difficult.
Maven’s direct-to-consumer model eliminates retail markup, pricing these at approximately $950 compared to similar-quality European glass at $1,500+. The transferable lifetime warranty covers defects regardless of ownership. For the amount of time hunters spend behind binoculars versus riflescopes, investing in quality glass here provides the best return on investment.
Meindl Comfort Fit Hunter Boots
Meindl’s Comfort Fit Hunters represent the pinnacle of traditional European bootmaking applied to modern hunting needs. Handmade in Germany, these boots combine Old World craftsmanship with contemporary materials and design for exceptional durability and comfort.
The uppers use 2.8mm nubuck leather that’s been specially treated for water resistance while maintaining breathability. A rubber rand wraps the lower boot for protection against rocks, cactus, and abrasion. The one-piece leather construction minimizes seams that could fail or leak. Gore-Tex Duratherm insulation provides warmth rated to -20°C while maintaining waterproof breathability.
The Vibram Multigriff sole uses a proprietary rubber compound that maintains flexibility in cold conditions while providing excellent traction on varied terrain. The aggressive lug pattern sheds mud effectively. The sole is stitched and cemented using the traditional Norwegian welt construction, allowing for resoling when eventually needed.
The Air-Active footbed combines cork and activated carbon for moisture management and odor control. The cork gradually molds to your individual foot shape, creating a custom fit over time. The footbed is replaceable, extending boot life. Meindl’s Digafix lacing system uses ball-bearing eyelets that allow the laces to move freely, enabling even pressure distribution and reducing pressure points.
The Memory Foam collar padding conforms to your ankle shape, preventing heel slip and hot spots. The two-zone lacing allows independent adjustment of forefoot and ankle areas for optimal fit. Weight is approximately 3.5 pounds per pair for size 10—substantial but not excessive for the support and protection provided.
At around $400, these boots represent a significant investment. However, with proper care, they’ll last a decade or more of hard hunting. The ability to resole extends their life even further. For hunters who measure their seasons in dozens of days afield rather than weekends, the comfort and durability justify the cost.
Knives of Alaska
The Alpha Wolf from Knives of Alaska exemplifies functional design without unnecessary frills. This American-made fixed blade performs every field task from delicate caping to heavy quartering with equal competence.
The blade uses D2 tool steel, a high-carbon, high-chromium steel that offers exceptional edge retention while remaining field-sharpenable. With 58-60 Rockwell hardness, it’s hard enough to hold an edge through multiple animals but not so hard that touch-ups require special equipment. The steel composition provides good corrosion resistance for a non-stainless steel.
The 3.875-inch drop point blade design provides a strong tip for detail work while maintaining enough belly for skinning cuts. The full flat grind extends from spine to edge, providing excellent cutting geometry for slicing tasks. The blade thickness of 0.156 inches provides strength for prying and splitting joints without being unnecessarily heavy.
The Suregrip handle uses a rubberized thermoplastic that maintains grip security when wet, bloody, or cold. The finger grooves and palm swell lock the knife in your hand during heavy cutting tasks. The handle is secured with Allen screws rather than rivets, allowing for tightening if needed. The orange accents make the knife visible if dropped in grass or leaves.
Overall length measures 8.5 inches with a weight of 5.3 ounces—substantial enough for leverage but not so heavy it becomes burdensome. The included leather sheath features heavy-duty stitching and a belt loop that accommodates belts up to 2 inches. A drainage hole prevents moisture accumulation.
At approximately $130, it’s priced competitively with mass-produced import knives while offering American manufacturing, superior steel, and a lifetime warranty. The knife arrives sharp enough to shave and maintains that edge through hard use. For hunters who process their own game, a quality fixed blade is essential equipment, and the Alpha Wolf delivers professional-level performance.
Klymit Static V Luxe Sleeping Pad
The Static V Luxe addresses the common complaint about sleeping pads—they’re too narrow for comfortable sleep. At 30 inches wide and 76 inches long when inflated, it provides room for side sleepers and active sleepers who move during the night. Despite the generous dimensions, it packs down to just 5″ x 10″, about the size of a water bottle.
The V-chamber design is the key to its performance. Unlike traditional horizontal or vertical baffles that allow air to move freely, creating instability, the V-chambers limit air movement while providing consistent support. The design naturally centers you on the pad and prevents the “waterbed” effect common with other inflatables. The side rails further enhance stability and prevent rolling off during the night.

The 75-denier polyester fabric balances durability with weight, resisting punctures from ground debris while keeping total weight to 26.4 ounces. The fabric has a soft feel that doesn’t create noise with movement—important in hunting camps where early risers shouldn’t wake the entire tent. A patch kit is included for field repairs.
Inflated thickness of 3 inches provides genuine comfort even for side sleepers, keeping hips and shoulders off the ground. The pad inflates in approximately 10-15 breaths thanks to the high-flow valve. The same valve allows for quick deflation and prevents air loss during inflation. Fine-tuning firmness is easy with the precise valve control.
The R-value of 1.3 makes it suitable for three-season use when combined with appropriate sleeping bags. For colder conditions, it can be paired with a closed-cell foam pad for increased insulation. At around $100, it costs more than basic pads but far less than premium ultralight options. For truck camping, base camps, or any situation where comfort trumps weight savings, the Static V Luxe transforms sleep quality in the field.
Lion Energy Safari UT 1300 Power Station
The Safari UT 1300 provides reliable, quiet power for modern hunting camps where electronics have become essential. With 1,300 watt-hours of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery capacity, it can power everything from LED lights to laptops to CPAP machines for multiple days.
The LiFePO4 chemistry offers significant advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries: longer lifespan (3,500+ cycles versus 500), better temperature stability, and inherent safety with no risk of thermal runaway. The battery maintains performance in temperatures from -4°F to 140°F, covering all hunting conditions.
Output options include two 120V AC outlets providing 1,200W continuous power (2,400W surge), handling everything from phone chargers to power tools. Four USB-A ports and one USB-C PD port charge devices simultaneously. The 12V cigarette lighter socket powers traditional camping accessories. All outputs can be used simultaneously up to the total power limit.
The unit weighs 18 pounds and measures 11″ x 7″ x 8″—portable enough for easy transport but substantial enough for serious power needs. The integrated handle makes carrying convenient. An LCD display shows battery percentage, input/output wattage, and estimated runtime based on current draw.
Recharging options include wall outlet (6-7 hours for full charge), solar panels (varies by panel wattage—a 200W panel provides full charge in 8-10 hours of good sun), or 12V car charger for emergency top-offs. The MPPT solar charge controller maximizes solar efficiency. Pass-through charging allows simultaneous charging and discharging.
The battery management system prevents overcharging, over-discharging, and maintains optimal cell balance for longevity. With proper care, the battery should last 10+ years. At around $1,000, it’s a significant investment, but for camps that rely on electronics for communication, navigation, and comfort, reliable power becomes essential infrastructure.
Bushnell Trophy Xtreme Spotting Scope
The Trophy Xtreme spotting scope proves that functional optics don’t require a second mortgage. At approximately $350, it provides the magnification needed for evaluating game at distance, scouting new country, and observing shot placement at the range.
The 65mm objective lens gathers sufficient light for dawn and dusk observation—critical hunting hours when game is most active. The 20-60x zoom eyepiece provides versatility from scanning at lower powers to detailed observation at higher magnification. While image quality degrades somewhat at maximum zoom compared to premium optics, the 20-40x range provides sharp, bright images entirely suitable for hunting applications.
The optical system uses BaK-4 prism glass, a high-density glass that provides better light transmission and edge sharpness compared to cheaper BK-7 glass. Fully multi-coated optics—meaning all air-to-glass surfaces receive multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings—boost light transmission to 91%. The result is bright, contrasty images with good color fidelity.
The 45-degree angled eyepiece reduces neck strain during extended glassing sessions and allows for lower tripod heights, reducing wind shake. The rotating tripod collar allows for adjusting eyepiece position without moving the tripod. The retractable sunshade reduces glare and protects the objective lens.
Construction features a rubber-armored magnesium body that balances durability with weight. At 37 ounces, it’s light enough for backcountry use while remaining stable on a tripod. Waterproof and fog-proof construction with nitrogen purging protects internal components from moisture. The close focus distance of 20 feet allows for observing nearby subjects like birds or wildflowers.
The included tabletop tripod works for basic spotting, though a full-size tripod dramatically improves stability and comfort for extended glassing. For hunters who need occasional long-range optics but can’t justify premium spotting scope prices, the Trophy Xtreme provides entirely functional performance.
White Duck Outdoors Alpha Wall Tents
White Duck’s Alpha series wall tents create legitimate hunting camps rather than just camping spots. The 10′ x 12′ model provides 120 square feet of living space with 6-foot sidewalls and 8-foot center height—enough room to stand, move, and live comfortably for extended periods.
The tent uses 10.10 oz army duck canvas treated for water and mildew resistance. Unlike synthetic materials, canvas breathes, reducing condensation while maintaining weather protection. The material becomes more waterproof when wet as the fibers swell. The natural insulation properties of canvas help regulate temperature—cooler in heat, warmer in cold compared to synthetic tents.

The frame uses 1-inch steel tube construction with pin-lock connections for stability. Setup with two people takes approximately 30 minutes once you understand the process. The frame can withstand significant wind and snow loads when properly staked and guyed out. All stress points feature reinforced stitching and heavy-duty webbing.
A 5-inch stove jack with heat-resistant silicone gasket allows for wood stove installation, transforming cold weather camping. The screened windows with storm flaps provide ventilation and natural light while keeping bugs out. The sewn-in floor eliminates drafts and creates a finished living space. The heavy-duty #10 YKK zipper on the door handles years of use.
Interior options include a gear loft for organization, electrical access port for power cables, and multiple interior tie-out points for hanging lanterns or drying clothes. The tent weighs approximately 70 pounds total, making it suitable for truck camping or base camps but not backpacking.
At $700-900 depending on size, a canvas wall tent costs significantly more than synthetic alternatives. However, with proper care, a quality canvas tent lasts decades—many hunting camps use tents that are 20+ years old. For hunters who establish seasonal camps or hunt the same areas repeatedly, a wall tent creates a true home in the field.
Primos Trigger Stick Gen 3 Tripod
The Trigger Stick tripod shooting support has become ubiquitous in hunting camps and for good reason—it works. The Gen 3 version refines an already successful design with smoother operation and increased stability for accurate field shooting.
The tripod design provides inherently more stability than bipod or monopod alternatives, creating a solid shooting platform even on uneven terrain. The quick-detach yoke allows rapid deployment and removal of your rifle without fumbling with clamps or screws. The yoke rotates 360 degrees for tracking moving game or adjusting to different shooting positions.

Height adjustment ranges from 24 to 62 inches via the trigger mechanism—squeeze to adjust, release to lock. The adjustment is smooth and quiet, important when game is nearby. Each leg adjusts independently to compensate for uneven ground. The legs lock solidly without creep under rifle weight.
The rubber-tipped feet provide grip on hard surfaces while being gentle enough for use on vehicle hoods or tailgates. Optional spike feet are available for soft ground. The legs feature foam padding where you’re likely to grip them, providing comfort and reducing noise.
Constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum, the tripod balances strength with weight at 4.2 pounds. It’s light enough for carrying on stalks but substantial enough for stability. The anodized finish resists corrosion and scratches. When collapsed, it measures 27 inches for transport.
Beyond shooting support, the Trigger Stick serves double duty as a glassing platform for binoculars or spotting scopes using the same quick-detach yoke. This versatility makes it particularly valuable for spot-and-stalk hunting. At around $90-130 depending on model, it’s an affordable accuracy enhancer that benefits shooters of all skill levels.
Wiley X Grid Captivate Sunglasses
Wiley X Grid sunglasses combine tactical-level protection with hunting-specific lens technology. These aren’t fashion accessories—they’re safety equipment that happens to look good. The frames meet ANSI Z87.1 safety standards for high-velocity impact protection, essentially giving you safety glasses that you’ll actually want to wear.
The Captivate amber lenses are the key technology for hunters. Unlike standard amber lenses that simply tint everything yellow, Captivate lenses selectively filter light wavelengths to enhance contrast in green environments. This makes spotting game in shadows or dense cover noticeably easier. The lenses highlight browns and earth tones while maintaining color accuracy for blood trailing.
The frames feature a removable facial cavity seal—a foam gasket that blocks wind, dust, and peripheral light. This might seem excessive until you’re glassing into a 30mph wind or riding an ATV through dusty terrain. The seal is easily removed when not needed, converting the glasses to standard eyewear.
Construction uses Triloid nylon frames that maintain flexibility in cold weather while resisting heat deformation. The rubberized nose pads and temple tips prevent slipping when sweating. The wraparound design provides excellent peripheral protection and vision. The frames accommodate prescription lens inserts for those who need corrective lenses.
All Wiley X lenses provide 100% UV protection. The Selenite polycarbonate lenses are shatterproof and scratch-resistant. T-Shell coating resists scratching on both sides of the lens. The glasses float if dropped in water—a nice feature for waterfowl hunters or stream crossings.
At around $120-150, they cost more than gas station sunglasses but provide legitimate protective equipment. For hunters who spend significant time in bright conditions, quality eye protection prevents both immediate discomfort and long-term damage. The enhanced visual acuity for spotting game is a valuable bonus.

Pendleton Whisky might seem out of place in a gear review, but it’s become as much a part of hunting camp tradition as morning coffee. This 86-proof Canadian whisky, finished with glacier water from Oregon’s Mount Hood, provides the perfect cap to successful hunts and the consolation for the ones that got away.
The whisky itself is distilled in Canada and aged in oak barrels before being brought to Oregon for finishing. The glacier water finishing adds a smooth, clean character that makes it exceptionally drinkable neat—important when you’re sipping from a flask in camp rather than mixing cocktails.

The flavor profile features vanilla and caramel notes from the oak aging, with hints of butterscotch and honey. There’s a slight spice on the finish that warms without burning. It’s approachable enough for whisky newcomers while having enough character for enthusiasts. The 86 proof (43% ABV) provides warmth without overwhelming heat.
The included stainless steel flask makes it properly packable for hunting trips. The flask holds 6 ounces—enough for several ceremonial toasts without adding significant pack weight. The screw-top lid seals securely to prevent leaks in your pack.
At around $25-30 per bottle, it’s positioned in the middle of the whisky market—not rotgut but not precious either. It’s whisky meant to be shared around a campfire, passed between friends after a hard day’s hunt, and raised in toast to the animals that feed us. In a world of increasingly technical gear, sometimes the simple pleasure of good whisky with good friends remains the most important tradition.
Thermacell MR450 Mosquito Repeller
The Thermacell MR450 creates an invisible 15-foot zone of protection against mosquitoes and other biting insects without spray, lotion, or smoke. For early season hunting when mosquitoes can make life miserable, this device provides relief that actually works.
The system uses heat to activate repellent pads containing allethrin, a synthetic copy of a natural repellent found in chrysanthemum flowers. The butane cartridge heats a metal grate, which vaporizes the repellent, creating an invisible, odorless zone of protection. Unlike sprays that only protect treated skin, the Thermacell creates area protection for your entire body and nearby companions.
Operation is simple: insert a repellent pad, screw in a butane cartridge, and click the igniter. The device reaches full effectiveness in 10-15 minutes and maintains protection as long as it’s running. Each repellent pad lasts 4 hours, each butane cartridge lasts 12 hours. The indicator window shows when the pad needs replacement—it changes from blue to white.
The MR450 features a rubberized armor exterior that resists impacts and provides grip security. The integrated belt clip allows hands-free carry. The Zone Mosquito Protection indicator light confirms the unit is operating. An auto shut-off feature conserves fuel when tipped over.
The repellent is EPA-approved and has been independently tested to show 98% reduction in mosquito landings. It’s effective against mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums but doesn’t affect bees, butterflies, or other beneficial insects. The repellent has no odor that might alert game to your presence.
At around $30 for the unit plus $10-15 for refill packs, it’s a modest investment for massive comfort improvement. For turkey hunters sitting still in mosquito-infested bottoms or early season deer hunters in swamps, the Thermacell transforms miserable sits into comfortable ones.
Benelli Lupo Bolt-Action Rifles
The Benelli Lupo brings Italian design philosophy to the bolt-action rifle market. While Benelli is better known for shotguns, the Lupo demonstrates their ability to create accurate, innovative rifles that compete with established bolt-action manufacturers.
The rifle features a free-floating, crio-treated barrel that enhances accuracy through stress relief and dimensional stability. The barrel is threaded for suppressors or muzzle brakes—increasingly important as more states allow suppressor hunting. The 24-inch barrel length in 6.5 Creedmoor balances velocity with handling.
The progressive rifling starts with wider grooves at the chamber, gradually tightening toward the muzzle. This design reduces bullet deformation during initial engraving while maintaining spin for stability. Benelli claims this improves both accuracy and barrel life.
The action uses a three-lug bolt with a short 60-degree throw for faster cycling. The bolt handle is oversized for positive manipulation with gloves. The two-position safety is located behind the bolt handle for easy thumb operation. The detachable box magazine holds 5 rounds and sits flush with the stock for clean lines.
The adjustable trigger breaks cleanly between 2.2 and 4.4 pounds via a simple allen screw adjustment. The trigger face is smooth and wide for comfort. There’s minimal take-up and overtravel, contributing to accuracy potential.
The synthetic stock features Benelli’s Progressive Comfort recoil reduction system—essentially a series of chevron-shaped cuts that allow the comb to flex slightly under recoil. The stock includes an adjustable comb for proper scope alignment and spacers for length-of-pull adjustment from 13.75 to 14.75 inches.
The rifle consistently produces sub-MOA groups with quality ammunition—impressive for a mass-produced firearm. At around $1,400-1,600, it’s priced competitively with other European rifles while offering unique features and Italian craftsmanship. For hunters who appreciate innovation and design as much as function, the Lupo offers both.
