The arrival of spring is a harbinger for many changes. Leaf buds are starting to appear on barren branches, shorts are suddenly en vogue and picnic tables are the preferred spot to snack. While many people typically associate rosés with the sweeter version of the style of wine prevalant following the end of World War II (when rosés were introduced and gained popularity in America) until the late 90s, the wine has evolved. These days a drier, fruit-forward wine that resembles its French counterparts is being turned out by American vintners, especially here in Colorado. Here are four rosés that are perfect to bring along to sip after spring skiing, or in your back yard after a day playing outside.
Infinite Monkey Theorem Rosé
For the last eleven years, Denver-based Infinite Monkey Theorem has been turning out some pretty amazing wines at their facility in the RiNo neighborhood. Using grapes sourced primarily from the Western Slope, they turn out a wide variety of wines ranging from light and refreshing viogniers to dark and complex cabernets. Their rosé has a sweetness that is perfectly balanced and leaves you wanting more. Colterris 17 “Canteriss” Rose of Cabernet
Located in Palisade, in the heart of Colorado wine country, is Colterris Winery. Using their own grapes, plus others sourced from the region, they consistently turn out award-winning wines. Their reds are the rave of numerous restaurateurs along the Front Range, but they also turn out a sublimely tasty rosé that is made from the same grapes that go into their cabernet sauvignon. Bookcliff Vineyards Touch of Red
As one of the older winemakers in Colorado, Boulder-based Bookcliff Vineyards consistently creates full-bodied reds that age well (their blended reds stand up well to anything that California turns out). Using a wide array of grapes grown at their vineyard on the Western Slope they are able to turn out great wines made solely from Colorado grapes.
