Penitente Canyon, Colorado
12 Hours of Penitence endurance mountain bike race – a course so entertaining that you’ll want to do one more lap
This year’s 12 Hours of Penitence race is on Saturday, September 14, 2019 with solo, duo, three-person, and four-person teams.
The inaugural race in 2015 was the brain-child of Sydney Schalit and Brink Messick of Salida. They stitched together a 17-mile course of mobius single-track in the high desert canyons of the San Luis Valley at Penitente Canyon recreation area near Del Norte, Colorado.
Fast forward to 2019, the race has evolved to incorporate all racer camping, entertainment, food/drink, etc. on-site. The base area is a family-friendly, festival-type atmosphere all day long while racers are racking up miles on the course. Pack up the tent/van/camper for a fun-filled fall weekend in Southern Colorado’s mountains.
Each lap has 2,000 feet in elevation gain and captures the best sections of trail this network has to offer. Intermediate riders will be challenged; advanced riders can push their limits. Come join the fun and ride in the beautiful Penitente Canyon.
Net proceeds from the event benefit the SLV Rattlers, a local teen NICA mountain bike team. www.12HoursofPenitence.com
