Cigar City Maduro Brown Ale

When traveling, one of the best things to do is search out local breweries to sample their wares. Living in Colorado it is easy to get spoiled. We are home to some of the best brewers in the country, and due to our state’s unique liquor laws, we also have one of the most open beer markets in the country. So when I get the chance to visit one of the more highly rated breweries in the country whose beer is not available in the Rockies, I jump at the opportunity.

Cigar City Brewing is a prime example of the rapidly changing face of the American drinker. Thriving in a state—Florida—that is commonly associated with spring break, beaches and bland commercial beer, its beers can be found across the Sunshine State in bars and restaurants. As the craft beer movement rapidly makes inroads into Dixie (the highest percentage of new breweries are in the South) Cigar City is helping point the way to others.

Since opening over a decade ago, Cigar City has garnered their fair share of awards; multiple GABF and World Beer Cup medals are proudly displayed in their expansive taproom located in Tampa Bay. With two bars to belly up to the selection is expansive, with over 22 different beers on tap, many of them different versions of one beer. You can get a tasting flight allowing you to notice the subtle differences between each pour. They also dispense each beer in its correct glassware, something you are starting to see happening more often these days. It’s so nice to see your beer served correctly. Behind the front growler-fill bar they offer one of the coolest things I have seen to date in any brewery—a 32oz can of beer that is filled and sealed on sight, the perfect growler. When will the breweries in Colorado get this machine?

Brewed in homage to Tampa’s cigar making history, their Maduro Brown Ale might be one of the smoothest, and tastiest browns I have ever had. Brewed with flaked oats it has the sweetness of traditional oatmeal stouts, but an incredibly silky body. The rich chocolate malt flavor has hints of toffee, espresso and maple with a hint of breadiness. It has a slight hint of hops that contributes a slight bite. It is a beautiful beer that poured perfectly from my grab-and-go growler can. It has a rating of 96 out of 100 on beeradvocate.com and 93 out of 100 on ratebeer.com.

So the next time you are headed to Florida on vacation or work look for the local crafts on tap, there is a fair share these days, and if Cigar City is pouring, make sure you grab a pint. You won’t be sorry.
