Fall is fast approaching, and soon we get to enjoy one of the best traditions imported to our country from Europe—Oktoberfest! That annual festival of bacchanalia where thousands of revelers put on costumes, gather in large groups, and swill delicious brews, all while listening to great music. OK, so maybe we don’t go as big as they do in Germany, but seeing as Colorado is home to some of the best craft beers in the nation, it seems only fitting that you should be able to visit a different Oktoberfest each weekend, and you can.
This weekend the town of Breckenridge puts on their annual homage to all things Deutch. Kicking off this Friday September 11th at 2PM there will be more beer, food, and dancing in the streets than you could shake your lederhosen at… if you own a pair, even better!
With a selection of traditional favorites being poured from Paulaner Brewing of Munich chances are you will quickly feel in the spirit of things. Founded in 1634 by the Minim friars of the Neudeck ob der Au cloister they are one of only six breweries allowed to supply beer for the traditional Oktoberfest in Germany. They will be pouring their sublimely smooth Wiesn a golden lager brewed only once a year for the festival time. If you are looking something with a bit more malt their Marzen is a full-bodied brew that will ward off any chills in the air. In the hopes of keeping summer around a bit longer their Hefeweizen has a slightly sweet flavor perfect to enjoy after an afternoon chasing the fish.
Best of all this is no festival where you will be drinking from crappy plastic glasses. Your admission also scores you a sweet beer stein. You better start practicing your drinking songs and toasting abilities now. I suggest watching the movie “Beerfest” immediately.
No Oktoberfest would be complete without traditional German food, only the best grub ever for drinking. Plans call for over three-dozen vendors turning out bratwursts, pretzels, spaetzels, and more.
So what are you waiting for? Load up the SUV with your gear and escape the city for the weekend. Knock out some great mountain biking while you still can, bag a few peaks, wet a few lines, and most of all have a few brews.
