The greatest ski run of my life? Well, it wasn’t at Camelback in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania, on bulletproof hardpack in the rain. (Westerners have no clue what real hardpack is!) Of course, that was in leather boots (but with buckles) on 207cm Dynastars. I’d have to say that it was a bluebird early Spring day in Vail, with 5 friends. By now I was sporting A/T gear (Silvrettas & Swallow skis). We exited the gate on Lost Boy on the top of Game Creek at 10,800ft and skied the Minturn Mile (which is really 3 miles) down to 8,200 ft and my friend’s house at the end of 6th street in Minturn, where both warm & alcoholic libations were waiting. The group photo, taken in a clearing halfway down, still adorns the walls of several of those present that day. What made it the greatest ski run was not the copious amounts of untracked turns, nor my Killy-like form (not), but the joy and intimacy of skiing it with best friends. To misquote Alex Lowe, “The best skier in the world is the one who’s having the most fun.”

Not the greatest, but the one I still get teased about: Probably 1996 or so, Valle Nevado, Chile, one of the few years in the 90s that it snowed in the mountains just east of Santiago. At the top of the run, I spotted a team of sled dogs all resting in the snow and started to ski over to say “hi doggies.” Lost control and slid down the hill on my stomach. The dogs all just stayed curled up and followed my skid with their cool blue eyes.
Best run: Back bowls at Vail, pre-kids, pre-move-to-Chile, so sometime in the 80s. I do know I wore a leopard-print down jacket.

There have been so many over the years, that it’s’ hard to pick one….
The 3 foot dump at MJ skiing laps in the trees off the Iron Horse Chair, Snowcat trips to Chicago Ridge, Steamboat in an all out blizzard with snow coming down so hard I was skiing blind, powder days in the aspen grove at Beaver Creek’s Tresher Glades, poaching the Ball Room on Peak 10 at Breck in spring untracked, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village in Banff during a mid January dump cycle…the list goes on and on….
But the most recent epic was the last weekend of the last season at a favorite local stomping ground, Blue Sky at Vail….6 straight runs under Earl’s Express chair and Champagne Glade before anyone really got back there in sparkly, knee deep under bluebird skies…seeing only our tracks.
But who’s kidding who? Honestly, any day on the mountain is a great day….there’s no such thing as a bad run.
