I learned to climb in Colorado, on the Front Range, where we have 10,000 climbing routes within a two hours’ drive of the center of a city of three million people—sport, trad, bouldering, alpine, ice—and I’ll argue with anyone who thinks their city has better climbing access (operative word being “city”).
UpaDowna began with the mantra “Up a Mountain, Down a Beer” celebrating the tradition of enjoying a tasty craft beer after a hard days work climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, etc. UpaDowna has a deeper meaning now, embracing their entire community (including those under drinking age) and finding new ways to get folks outdoors.
I was always jealous of the kids ripping the rec path from Copper Mountain down to Frisco where I lived, watching them in shock and awe as they sped along without helmets or pads, wondering what would drive someone to take such chances.
Crested Butte is the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado” and offers endless events, festivals and activities all summer long. Between hiking, biking, fishing and rafting, unique local shopping, vibrant art galleries and fun events, there is always something to do here.
